My Morning Routine…

Last week, I wrote about Daily Rituals and how much I have unexpectedly loved the book as part of my morning ritual. This week, I write to share with you the other half of that morning routine that I also mentioned.

While making my morning coffee, I wrote about how I will read one writer or artist’s routine in the book Daily Rituals. The other book I read while waiting for the coffee to brew is The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday.

This book is a collection of quotes by various Stoic philosophers to be read at one page per day. There are 366 pages, in case of a leap year, and they are marked by dates. For example, today I read March 15th’s one page quote by a stoic philosopher with Ryan Holiday’s interpretation of this quote.

It sounds simple and kind of silly to have a book like this in some ways. Sure, its Stoicism lite, but it has turned out to be a wonderful way to start the morning. Its a short quick read while I am waiting for other things to be ready and it keeps me from reading nonsense news on my phone or checking social media. Rather than diminishing my life with these distractions I have a book that for only a few minutes per day enriches my life with stoic writings.

Of course, this is not a book on writing. But reading great writers and, in this case, great philosophers helps get me in the mood for my daily writing. So that’s the two books I read every morning as part of my morning routine. What’s yours?
